The Bugatti T51A/38A Mystery roadster or Honeymoon roadster as seen on the PreWarCar stand at Retromobile last month (Feb 2013). "Mystery" because we still don´t know who created and built the roadster body and rebodied the once famous Anne Itier Type 51A Grand Prix car just prewar.

The 21st century has brought us many fantastic supercars, but when it comes to performance, there’s one to rule them all. I’m talking about the Bugatti Veyron. It was discontinued in 2015 after 450 units were built over 10 years, during which time, it reigned as the fastest street-legal production car in the world. The Veyron Super Spor t achieved 257.87 mph in 2010, a Guinness World Record that has survived to this day. This will change soon, however, as Bugatti has just unveiled a brand-new hypecar to replace the Veyron.

Meet the Chiron, the vehicle Bugatti claims as "the world’s most powerful, fastest, most luxurious, and most exclusive super sports car. "

Improving an already incredible supercar that has a 1,184-horsepower W-16 engine and can hit close to 260 mph without a speed limiter is a daunting mission, but Bugatti somehow managed to best the Veyron. Not surprisingly, the car has been named after Louis Chiron, Bugatti’s factory driver in the European Championship in the early 1930s. He was one of the fastest drivers in the pre-Formula One racing era and previously inspired Bugatti to name the 1999 18/3 Chiron Concept after him. It’s been 17 years since that concept, but Chiron’s name now adorns what will become one of the greatest supercars in history.

The Bugatti Chiron made its debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show and the Molsheim-based brand claims it will shatter several record. “It is part of human nature to cross boundaries and set new records – to run 100 m faster than ever before, to fly even further into space and to enter new realms. This striving is also our driving force at Bugatti,” said Wolfgang Dürheimer, President of Bugatti Automobiles. “The Chiron is the result of our efforts to make the best even better.”

Keep reading to find out what makes the Bugatti Chiron special and sets it apart from its already spectacular predecessor.

Updated 06/27/2016: Bugatti dropped two new video for its latest Chiron supercar. The first one was shot at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans and includes on track footage and drivers parade, while the second one is an on board footage shot at the 2016 Goodwood Festival Of Speed. Hit "Play" to watch them.

Tragedy: Bugatti 100p Replica Down, Pilot Lost (Updated)

Magnificent Recreation Involved in Fatal Accident in OK

ANN RealTime Update, 080616, 2058 ET: ANN has learned that the fatal loss of Scotty Wilson in the much beloved Bugatti 100p replica occurred about a minute into the third flight of the aircraft. After gear retraction, the aircraft was observed in a shallow climb before it reportedly rolled suddenly to the left and pitched down to impact. The accident was not deemed to be survivable and the aircraft burned after impact.

Original Report: ANN regrets to note that the truly stunning Bugatti 100p replica is reported down, with the loss of its pilot, Scotty Wilson, an experienced military pilot. The accident occurred early Saturday morning, near Burns Flat, OK.

The replica first flew in August of 2015 and dealt with a number of teething problems along the way, including an incident on its first flight whereby the vehicle was damaged when the right brake failed after landing, and the plane veered off the runway. The short hop reached only reached 100 feet AGL... after the airplane veered off the runway after landing, the nose of the airplane sunk into soft ground caused by heavy rains and damaged the spinner and both props of the airplane.

The Saturday accident has been confirmed by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and reportedly took place near the Clinton-Sherman Airfield FB at 0825 local time. Few details are available at this time outside of the fact that the aircraft was involved in the early stages of a test program of a replica aircraft that never actually flew in its original iteration.

The airframe's original designer, Ettore Bugatti, was a well-known and highly-regarded European entrepreneur and industrialist, according to the Bugatti 100p website. Bugatti was best known for his automotive efforts but, "Few know that Bugatti built the most extraordinary airplane of its time. The Bugatti 100P exhibited cutting-edge aerodynamics combined with innovative, performance-enhancing features for which Bugatti won five patents. It is perhaps the most historically-significant airplane that never flew."

ANN will present more details as they become available.

BURNS FLAT, OKLAHOMA -- On a morning that seemed perfect for flying, a small crowd of airplane enthusiasts gathered to watch the only airworthy Bugatti 100P attempt its third test flight.

It was just before 8:20 Saturday morning.

The aircraft took off safely, but less than a minute later witnesses say it banked suddenly left and crashed nose first into a field just north of the Clinton -Sherman Air Field.

Eyewitness crew member Aldert Van Nieuwkoop said, "It wasn't climbing at a very high rate. The next thing that I saw was a very sharp turn to left and down she went."

Within seconds the wood frame craft caught fire.

A chase helicopter landed quickly to give aid but the pilot, Scotty Wilson, likely died on impact.

Wreckage smoldered for the next hour as horrified family and flight crew members could only watch helplessly.

"Of course everybody is in a state of shock," said crew assistant chief Stan Shumway. "It's not every day you see a friend go down like that. We don't know what happened. We will try to find that out as time goes on."

The historic airplane, shown here in the hours immediately before the crash, was more than 7 years in the planning and construction.

It was a replica of Etorre Bugatti's original design for a light weight and very fast fighter airplane.

Designers had to mothball the project during World War II.

As a result the original airplane never flew.

"I call it the most historically significant airplane that never flew," said Scotty Wilson in an earlier interview.

Wilson sought expert advice and funding from all over the world.

The project consumed his professional life and both a fighter pilot and test pilot.

In March of 2014 we caught up with the new Bugatti 100P as it neared completion in Tulsa.

Early Saturday morning Scotty busied himself with attaching miniature cameras to his plane.

Another camera team was to follow and record the Bugatti in flight.

Friend and colleague Shumway described Wilson, "With 11,000 hours in the cockpit, type rated in 12 different kinds of aircraft, he was the best guy in the world to build this."

Crew members said later this third test flight was to be the last.

Wilson and crew planned to put it on permanent display at a museum in Great Britain.

Its final resting place, instead, is a bean field near Burns Flat.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board arrived Saturday afternoon to begin an inquiry into the crash.
