Stefan Marjoram official and first ever Artist in residence at The Bugatti Trust

Posted on May 17, 2016

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of La Vie en Bleu at Prescott on the weekend of May 28/29th 2016, The Bugatti Trust is welcoming Stefan Marjoram as its first ever artist in residence with an exhibition and hands-on workshops to ‘Draw your own Bugatti’. Stefan has just had his inaugural exhibition a few weeks ago at the Bicester Heritage Sunday Scramble. In the spirit of the Bugatti legacy where art and engineering cohabit in perfect harmony and where all the most treasured survivors of the make started with a simple pencil sketch by Ettore Bugatti himself, it is only fitting that the Bugatti Trust celebrates art and automotive design in its purest form.

Stefan Marjoram

Stefan Marjoram combines a successful career as creative director working with renowned studios such as Aardman Animation (‘Wallace & Gromit’, ‘Shaun the sheep’…) with a love for cars, motorsport and car design having passionately sketched and photographed arresting images of some of our most celebrated historic cars over the last few years. He is also the official photographer and film maker documenting the Bloodhound SSC Land Speed Record project.

Stefan Marjoram

Stefan will run a number of drawing workshops over the two days of La Vie and you will learn how to draw your own Bugatti whether you are 7 or 77 years old! There will also be an opportunity to see a selection of Stefan’s work and we are particularly excited to be showing his limited edition series of prints of his 5th series of Advent sketches. Stefan challenges himself to draw a car each day during the 24 days build up to Christmas and has for the first time produced a limited edition of prints of each one of the 24 sketches. There will be Bugattis (of course) but also GNs, Darracqs, De Dion Boutons, the Fiat S76 Beast of Turin which has just confirmed its attendance for La Vie en Bleu and many other favourites.

Complicated yet clever marketing, to start a new auction company and organise a first auction in worldfamous Hershey, but in a totally different segment of the calender. Not early October, but June 11. They show guts these guys and they aim high. Top cars, top photography must proove their ambition. Here just two fine examples of what The Finest Automobile Auctions has in mind for the future.

When you read about the history of certain cars, it encourages deeper research and you end up better informed - not only about the car but about the people and the times that surround it.
The 1927 Bugatti Type 38A Grand Sport is just such a car and is being offered for sale at The Elegance At Hershey auction held on Saturday June 11 by The Finest Automobile Auctions.
The car's first owner was L.G.Bachelier who co-founded the Bugatti Owners' Club in UK and owned a total of nine Bugattis in his lifetime. The description records all the car's owners and what they did to the car, but the current owner has spent much time and money on a meticulous restoration with its supercharged 8 cylinder Type 35A engine and Art Deco inspired Grand Sport boat tail body. People were stunned when the car was sold in 1991 for $91,000 - these days we are more used to seeing what buyers will pay for such fine cars, but to somebody who wants a comfortable sporting grand touring Bugatti with excellent road manners, it's worth every penny.
The 1929 Type 40A Roadster went to the US after the war and was discovered in southern California when an old house was demolished in Chavez Ravine for the development of the baseball park for the Los Angeles Dodgers. This model has 4 cylinders and no supercharger but with the elegant Jean Bugatti designed body, it pleased the Parisian aristocrat Alastair Marmaduke Gresham Leveson-Gower who drove it to Paris with Louis Chiron as co-driver!
We love learning the stories that are woven into the history of old cars and future generations will enjoy doing the same as each new driver adds his/her own fresh adventures.

Ettore Bugatti first produced a 'Baby' Bugatti in 1927 for his son Roland, and this picture shows him, age 5, next to big brother Jean in his Type 43. Ever since then, children of Bugatti enthusiasts have occasionally been encouraged to enjoy motoring early in a junior sized car.
The young lady in our picture was spotted practicing in the Bugatti Trust's car park when we visited 'La Vie en Bleu' recently at Prescott Hill Climb. In fact there were several youngsters enjoying the sunshine and Bugattis because The Bugatti Trust had arranged some drawing classes for children ( of all ages) to be given by professional artist/photographer Stefan Marjoram .
Our young friday lady was more interested in driving, with Papa following closely behind clutching a safety rope, whilst the other young future drivers were concentrating on drawing. The results were encouraging and proud parents took pictures of their talented offspring who may one day become custodians of these wonderful cars - and follow in their fathers' footsteps.

Direct automobile links of econic marques forever gone ? Messier-Bugatti-Dowty & Hispano-Suiza become Safran.

The French aerospace giant Safran recently published a press-release explaining that Hispano-Suiza is now renamed Safran Transmission Systems and Messier-Bugatti-Dowty now is Safran Landing Systems. Possibly not everybody realises, but the names Bugatti and Hispano-Suiza were still alive as suppliers of specialists aviation components. The direct links with the iconic names of Bugatti and Hispano-Suiza have now disappeared.1935 Bugatti-800

Of course the Bugatti name is still very much alive today, as part of Volkswagen group, but the modern supercar has no bloodline with the original company. After the death of Ettore Bugatti in 1947 the company went in decline and the original car manufacturing business of Bugatti ceased in 1952, but the production of aircraft components continued. In 1963, the Bugatti company was sold to Hispano-Suiza, which on its turn was bought by Snecma in 1968, who also acquired Messier and so the Messier-Bugatti branch was formed in 1977.

1913 Vauxhall_Viper_NJ_hispano_suiza_engine-800Since WWI I, Hispano-Suiza had, next to its exotic car production, a long history of aircraft engine manufacture, and when after WW II the French branch's car division was stopped, it went on to build aircraft landing gear and Rolls-Royce jet engines under licence. It was then integrated in the Snecma group who later merged with Sagem into Safran. The original Spanish company had faded already long before...

It is sad news indeed when these old names are erased by our brave new world. However, the cars live on! The names will not be forgotten by those who care and who are passionate about important cars and their history.
