37140
A car with engine 37 which was one of three type 37s supplied to London (UK) Bugatti racing car agent Malcolm Campbell in April and May 1926. It was issued with the UK registration YP 9663 which it retained for over seventy years. It had at least sixteen UK owners including M.R. Galloway, W.B. Scott, D. Pigott, J.H."Jack" Bartlett, G.A. Wadham & V. Horstmann (dealers), C.H. Brookes, Clevelys-Thornton, Norman Utley (of St. Annes), Brian Finglass, L.G. Bachelier & G.H.B. Moss, R.M. Rothwell, and McLeod Carey. It is best remembered for its long-term ownership by Dudley Gahagan from 1940 until his death in 1997. Internet photographs show the car at the Brighton Speed Trials in 1947 (no. 221), at the VSCC 21st Anniversary meeting at Goodwood in 1955 and at Limonest (Lyon) in 1974 (no.50). In 1954 it was listed in "The Bugatti Book" with Gahagan's address given as Green Place, Wonersh, near Guildford, Surrey. It was noted that the car's tail had been shortened by six inches and it had been fitted with André shock absorbers all round, a Scintilla magneto, twin Solex 30m carburettors and a dry clutch with alternate lined plates. In 1962 Conway's international register gave similar information but Gahagan's address was now listed as Malden, Seale, Farnham, Surrey. David Sewell's 1989 British Bugatti Register (page 33) included the information that the car had been acquired in 1940. Around 1998 it was exported to Australia and in 2004 was listed in “Grand Prix Bugatti” reportedly owned by T. Whiteley.

The twin 30mm Solex carbs were not a very clever idea. The engine lost power compared to the original setup.
