Type 37 Sport, then 37A (body Grand Prix), now 37

Original article:
http://www.motor-klassik.de/oldtimer/bu ... 84773.html

English version:
http://www.bugattirevue.com/revue41/old.htm

This sentence
"....he had however not - as was written later - converted the car to a type 37A , or mounted a compressor on car number 37234"
is not translated correctly. The original version
"er hatte dazu aber weder - wie später immer wieder geschrieben wurde - auf einen Typ 37A mit Kompressor umgesattelt, noch einen Lader in den Wagen Nummer 36234 eingebaut."
says not "converted to" but "changed against", meaning that Ollendorf during all his career, and later also Karl Wagner, raced #37234. The car as survived today is an unsupercharged T37, and there are no signs that at any time a compressor was installed.

The photo from the Avusrennen 1931 shows Ollendorf's car (#16) with a pressure relief valve hole in the bonnet, and I have another one of Wagner at the Nürburgring in 1932 also with a hole. Also there are period newspaper race reports mentioning Ollendorf's "Kompressor-Bugatti". The history of 37234 does not include the registration IM-3333 (Saxony) as visible on the AVUS photo, only IIA-3926 (Munich) and IA-42314 (Berlin).

So obviously Mr. Strohhammer is wrong by reporting only one single Bugatti - 37234 - for Ollendorf. The history of his car without any doubt is correct until 1930, and also that after the war. However, the period 1931/32 covers a different car, in fact a T37A of unknown identity which Ollendorf changed against the old T37. Probably Hans Simons of Berlin was involved in both cars, because he made a living with the trading in T37's. Most German competition T37/37A at one point or another went through his hands.
