I work for Coachsmithing (A coachbuilder in Wisconsin - http://www.coachsmithing.com), and right now I am developing a modern inline 8 engine that will be configured in a manner that is visually similar to the famous Bugatti engines in the late 1930s.

This engine is being developed for our current Bugatti replica builds (a 57SC Atlantic and a T64) as well as all future Bugatti replicas that we build.

My engine will be a 4.3 liters DOHC engine with hemispherical combustion chambers, crossflow head, synchronous multi-port fuel injection (completely hidden), electronic distributorless ignition (also hidden), and a twin screw supercharger.

It won't be identical (visually) to the original Bugatti engine, but it will be unmistakably similar in configuration.

We are currently generating 3D models of the head. Once I have some graphics I'll put them up to show you what we've got.

Absolutley right Udo - I think a bit of harmless banter is well needed on this forum.
Is it me or has it lost its old vitality this year? - and what happened to Johan Buchner? He allways knew how to shake it up a bit.

Guys, the problem with this kind of online communication is that the non-verbal part is missing. So it is hard to interprete the meaning/emotion behind a message without the use of emoticons. :o :D

What is your idea of the minimum number of pages for a book Udolahr?

What also may help is that everyone who has not already done so, posts a proper introduction of themselves.
So that readers know who is behind a forum name and if the member is some kind of very acknowledged and/or expericenced specialist (or just an enthousiast like me who tries to learn and to share).

Even if you would want to stay anonymous, mentioning 40 years of Bugatti
ownership and hands-on experience in maintenance/rebuilding/restoring must mean something and helps others to position you and your credibility somehere in the Bugatti universe.
I think a little more insight into the (vast) Bugatti experience that some of our distinguished forum members posess, may help others to show a little more respect instead of distrust and suspicion.
For me a little more respect among posting members would make some topics much more enjoyable.

Johan's critisims to me are in a class of it's own; but I think he is enjoying his Land Cruiser 80 VX Turbo Diesel Automatic too much to be bothered by Bugatti's anymore. Or maybe he is harrassing other Land Cruiser owners on their South African forum nowadays  . But maybe he'll return one day who knows :?:

I agree with Barttore and the reason I hardly ever use the Forum is that I don't know who the other participants are! Are we ashamed of what we say or who we are?

I fully agree. Already 12 years ago I decided to use my full name only in bulletin boards and fora (forums?), because I stand to what I'm writing. Sometimes embarrassing, because in my early period I posted one or another "hoax", which sporadically even today is chasing me ("But it was you who said...."). But that's part of the game....

people love to be anonym in a forum , so they can say what they want .It shows a mental problem .It gets really scary if people start to live in a forum and all the social life happens in a forum . A perverse development of our time .

Barttore , What does that mean , 40 years of Bugatti ?Like , wearing 40 years Bugatti socks and shoes ? Or more likely talking 40 years about Bugatti ? As long you show nothing and only talk about it , it means nothing . Anonym I can claim anything in a forum . Without proof it is only talk .

Ok, everybody can see who I am. For more info you can google my name, and you will find all my history in Bugatti, including a photograph of me watching one when I was about 10 years old.

Back to Untame's original post:
In my eyes, it would be quite interesting to see how somebody would now create a straight-8, and give some Bugatti feel to it. So I'd be very interested to see the design, or better still, the complete engine. if the remarks on this forum (not always friendly, as always to somebody who is not getting his hands dirty on some 80 years old metal) scare you, please send me them personally. I will post them on my site.

As far as I know, the last attempt at a straight-8 was by Chrysler, who welded to Neon 4-cylinder units together for their fabulous Chrysler Atlantic. The long crankshaft of this engine had a terrible vibration problem in a very small rev range. Their solution: modify the engine management system in such a way that the engine would not run at that RPM!

good luck

There was a splendid april fools spoof many years ago in road and track. When the 4.2 litre Jaguar "E" type was on its way out to be replaced by the V12 version.Road and track "photo engineered" a STRAIGHT 12 cylinder version of the 4.2 litre engine.Claimed to be the long awaited replacement for the 4.2 litre. It featured a camera mounted on the bumper to see out of side roads [ due to the length of the bonnet] With six big SU carburettors on the engine it was Wonderful to behold.I wonder if anyone has a copy of that issue ? It would be fun to see it again.I have used the pen name Lazarus for forty years. When I was spares secretary of the Facel Vega car club and seemed to be the only person actually writing about the cars in the club magazine.Rather than have every article signed John Barton it seemed better to have a nom de biro for half of them ! I built my first T37 in 1983.

It would be nice if anybody would actually build such a 8.4 litre straight-12!

It would probably be necessary to tap the power of half way though, as in the T251.

A nice new thread is developng here also, everybody is telling the origin of their nickname!

Well, my nickname was invented in 1911, when my great-grandfather decided to call his son "Herman". The rest is history.

Herman the 3rd.
