hi,
just bought a used one (pur sang 35B) must be about 7 years old and got with that some free surprises.
steering is with a lot of slackness. thought it is worn out, but it was not!
it seems to be the normal pur sang argentina quality. just a too much space between axle and bearing - must be original and so it is hard to stay on road with a higher speed and nearly impossible with some crosswind.
i will try to post a video later.
now i am a proud owner of a "very expensive not really finished kit car" but until now nevertheless had some fun.
more later...

regards

One drove a Jag Mk2 Saloon. Had the same kind of steering. Needed 2 lanes at times.

Can the sides of the steering box be turned, so the bearing comes closer to the worm?

There have been many comments about Pur Sang quality, usually about poor quality, with new cars which have to be reworked before functioning properly. This includes engines, I had not heard about the steering box before.

Take care with those crosswinds!

This is a typical pur sang steering box problem . The 2 gears inside the aluminium housing are not deep enough machined . So the overlap of the gear teeth are sometimes only 1 mm . It is a joke and dangerous . Difficult to repair because it is hardened , better replace this gears .I had a few in my hands , and all had this problem .

you sure?
1 mm????
o.k. this steering is not the best, but 1 mm could not be true.
the teethes on my one are a little damaged because of different angles of the worm and the wheel, but seems to work - car is very, very old - about 7 years i think and worked for the former owners with this great piece of work ;-)
at the moment new bearings and grinding of the wheelaxle is made. let´s see if it´s getting better.
otherwise i have to buy a new one - and better not from Argentina ;-)
(but it seems there are 2 factories in argentina who are building 35B cars, and the other is much more better said the sales man .)
and then i will also replace the arms....the balls are looking a little terrible.
who makes better once (steering boxes)? and affordable (!!!) once???

until now the engine seems to run. but i don´t know what the former owner invested.
did about 800 Km last year.

hi,
what´s wrong with the engine? may be it is not the exact original layout, but.....anyway ;-)
read a lot, but couldn't find anything.
i also heard much bad things about the pur sang quality but also had some doubt about such posts - never know who and why it´s said...

Yea's - about 1 mm . But your gear looks completely different , is it hardened ? To find a company today , able to cut the right tooth is a problem . All use 20 degrees , because not many has the right tools .

really 1 mm ??? - i can´t believe. incredible.
hardened? at the moment i can't check it, because it is getting a overhauling.
may be i accused pur sang for nothing ;-)
may be this steering was changed some years ago to a reproduction from another experimental bugbuilder.
or may be this car isn't a pur sang?
could be one missing really original rare bugatti car???
just a joke ;-)

I had it in my hands , 1mm , I could not believe what I did see .The big gear was not cut deep enough .
I know about gears , I have may own gear cutting machines including bevel gears . To cut gears is almost a science . And if you recalculate Bugatti gears , you always get a surprise .
This gears getting a overhauling, there is nothing to overhaul ? Do you know , how many degrees this Bugatti gears should have ?

hi udolahr,
no, no, no, not the gears - they are just like new ;-)
only some new slide bearings for the new grinded axle of the wheel to reduce the hugh (original) play of this part.
i have a video here that shows the problem that i hope to fix, but can't post it.

if i could make a new one (set of gears) i would do so.....but....i have only a vice and a angle grinder - what do you think....will it work ;-)

for the moment, i think, i have to live with that...LIVE i said. and: don't think about the quality during driving, hoping it will last some more years.

a vice and a angle grinder is a good start for a poor sang Bugatti . You can weld the damaged part , grind it , and scrape it with engineers blue . I know people they are able to do this by hand .

@ udolahr - great statement - poor sang is best

guy who overhauled it said he can't turn it after reassembling, so he send it as it is...really good news - funny, isn't it.
so, steering box is back. i found a position of the wheel and worm where they are turning. now there is some play between worm and wheel, never recognized it before.
seems there is no chance to make it better.
i think of buying a new one.
who sells complete steering boxes, who has affordable prices and which quality is the best?
i hope to get some advices. PLEASE....

before you buy anything , show some pictures about the problem . Problem today , they all work with 20 degrees pressure angle because they do not have the right tools .

PA20 worm wheel/gear might work ok instead of PA14.5. More or less.
On the other hand additional 70-200 Eur isn't that much for the right tool.
