As far as I know they are for proper alignment on all earlier plainbearing Bugatti cranksafts. |

They are for alinging in the excentrical lathe, to make the big end axles (of whatever you call them). For an 8C, you can cut and grind 2 at a time, then reclamp the crankshaft 90 degrees turned, and do another set of 2. |

A grinding machine ! A grinding machine who can make 20mm wide endlos chips ? A normal 3 ton lathe would have a problem to make chips like this . And the krankshaft is still not ready machined for grinding , the yournals are not round . |

No, wide. See the picture posted by Jacobug. It is about the width of the chips. |

The debris that is usually coming off in enormous amounts, and if you don't clean up often, gets grabbed by the part, flying around dangerously. |

I do very little grinding, although I do use a surface grinder for small parts like Bugatti valvecaps for adjustment. The debris is usually called grit,or swarf. |

OK, if you go in the metal , what ever you call it , if it is 20 mm wide , just make a test . 2mm to 4mm is still OK. But 20mm or 25mm is alien. You need a very big machine like a 10 ton lathe . |

And that is probably what he had. A big machine. I recall having seen a pump factory finishing cast iron dredging pumps (approx 5 meter in diameter). The chips / swarf that came off, were small chips, probably 10-15cm long, and 4-5cm wide (they were correcting the flange for the lid). The pump was horizontal, by the way... |

Bugatti had some wonderful machines,If you look at the T57 brochure there is a photo of a T57 crankshaft being turned.Horizontally naturally. |
