Back to Bugatti aeroplane matters, although not the 100 prototype.I recently reread a book that I have on the subject of the USAF.Sixty years in pictures,by Paul Ellis.ISBN 0 7106 00224.[1980].On page 19 is a mention of the Packard-Le Pere LUSAC-11.Designed in 1918 for the US army engineering division by Capt.G.Le Pere.Designed around the Liberty engine but apparently three examples of the LUSAC-21 were fitted with the Bugatti/King 16 Cylinder engine."but they were inferior in performance to the [liberty engined ] LUSAC-11 and were not proceeded with" This if true would suggest that the Bugatti/King engine DID get into the air.Does anyone know where Paul Ellis got his information? |

Interesting info. I wonder if the source for that info still exists... All in all it is a long time ago, war, and not the Germans, making triple administrative copies of each document. |

I notice that this info is also on Wikipedia. There are several sources quoted for the information. The suggestion that the Bugatti/King engined planes were inferior does make one wonder if they could not in fact get off the ground ! |

It is certain that at least one airplane flew with the Bugatti -US model engine, most probably the Packard LePere LUSAC-21 (the LUSAC-11 having the Liberty engine). At the moment, I can not find the details of that flight, though I have it somewhere. Apparently, according to the info below (from http://www.aerofiles.com/_pa.html), there also was a LUSAGH-21, with a 475 HP Bugatti? As far as I know, there never was a 475HP version of the Bugatti - US-model. The only ones coming close to that figure being the later Breguet developments. Info from site: LePere LUSAC-11, LUSAGH-11 (McCook Field Engr Div) 1918 = Fighter. 2pOB; 425hp Liberty 12; span: 41'7" (>39'0") length: 25'3" (>25'5") v: 133/118/50 range: 320 ceiling: 20,200'; ff: 8/?/18 (p: Lt de Marmier). Dwight Huntington, Capt Georges LePere. Plywood fuselage, box-type wing struts. First US aircraft with a turbo-supercharger, and first to leave a vapor trail (SEE Chronology, 2/27/20). POP: 2 prototypes and 24 production models [AS40013/40023, AS42129/42142, AS42151]; orders for nearly 3,500 were cancelled at the Armistice. [AS40021] modified as 1p LUSAGH-11 with longer wings, a canopied cockpit, and 475hp Bugatti 16 (as LUSAGH-21 at McCook Field); span: 47'1" length: 24'4". (LUSAC = LePere US Army Combat; LUSAGH = LePere US Army Ground Harassment.) -LePere LUSAC-21 (McCook Field Engr Div) 1919 = LUSAC-11 refitted with 420hp Bugatti 16; length: 27'1". Gross wt: 4485#. POP: 1 prototype [AS40023]. |
