It may never fly. In fact, I would be nervous, as the wood must be so dry now that it became brittle. Or is Oshkosh a humid area? (70% -90%)

But a new built plane with the same design (but modern materials) is planned.

hopefully never 8) it would be a great shame to see it destroyed.It is bad enough that it is the states and not in France where it belongs.But a metal replica with sensible engines would be wonderful to behold.

I posted a series of pictures of one of these engines on flickr.com. photostream grahamlittle10 entitled 20090524 - Type 50B ex-de Monge "Bugatti" Aeroplane - Williamson, Jones.

I'm sure it has already been discussed, but can you remind me : is the enginge in my pictures front or rear ?

Well, the build of a replica has started, it will be fitted with less difficult engines, though the option to once fit it with replica T50B engines will be kept open.

And: the airplane was offered to the Le Bourget airplane museum more then once, they refused it. So the French are to blame that the airplane left France. It may well be that, had it not been for Ray Jones acquiring the airplane, it would have been scrapped.

Is it the Ray Jones or the Martin Dean engine? Jones was the front engine, it did not have the hole in the rear for the external starter.

Original concept was to start the rear engine externally, the rear engine drives the front propeller. This front propeller would then drive the rear propeller, and thus the front engine in order to start it. this proved impossible. Conclusion is that the front engine would have to be replaced by another one, probably the T50B aero engine which stands in the Schlumpf museum (and which is adapted to be started by the external starter).

My pictures are of Martin Dean's engine taken shortly after its rebuild. I don't recall seeing a 50B engine at Mulhouse. Does it spend some of its time in the reserve collection ?

In 70's, the aircraft is in the warehouses of Jean Salis Workshops at La Ferte Alais (Departement de l'Essone). Mr Jones assigned to the Salis team made removing the engine. They are extracted from the cell without damaging them. The engines start quickly to the U.S. in Michigan. Mr Jones used these engines for its cars or replicas of Bugatti cars, it offers the cell at the Museum of Air and Space at Le Bourget for a small fee. Which REFUSED the offer! More surprising still, the Museum of Aviation emits no pre-emption, which would have prevented the release of the French territory of that cell. It seems that this procedure was impossible at that time. After a few weeks, the cell follows the engines to the U.S.

Well, it was on view in the good old days in Mulhouse, before they modernized the Museum. It was just sitting there, no identification about what kind of special engine it really was.

In those days all engines were on display, including the steam engine, 1 1/2 US Bugatti engines (yes, one and a half!) and many more!

I liked it a lot better in those days, the endless rows of Bugattis, sitting side by side, just as the Schlumpf brothers had left it, basically. It was more impressive then it is now. And of course the "dark room" where they keep the most special Bugattis nowadays, don't really like it.

What is good now, of course, is that more and more of the Bugattis are in running order, and are shown (and driven) throughout Europe!

I can second to that. The dark room should be skipped. I also like the old entrance more then the new one. It had an athmosphere which I really liked. Something mysterious.
