Was Bugatti's half-scale Grand Prix car which was originally built for Roland really designated the type 52. If so, it was out of sequence with other type numbers.

Found this after a long time:

No, this childrens car is not the type 52, rather the type "Baby". (as can be read on all factory documentation).

The type 52 seems to be a development of the type 50 engine.

If all the world call an elephant an elephant why call it by its african name which nobody would recognise? especially if the real T52 is a prototype which never saw the light of day?

Well, we'll continue to call it the Mexican Flue then....

I don't agree Lazarus; just because everybody does it wrong, does not relieve us of the task to try and do it right!

Furthermore, it would be nice to know who started calling the Baby the Type 52, and why!

But when, and why, and do we still have factory documentation, stating "type 52"

The ME 163 was a piston engined aircraft design by Willie Messerschmitt in competition with the Fiesler Storch. It is of course well known that the ME 163 was the rocket fighter Komet.Nobody today of course means anything other than the Komet if they discuss the ME163. The reason for this anomaly is that the Komet was given a designation that would disguise the true nature of the project. The point is that we simply do not know the truth about the T52 designation.I shall continue to call it a T52 because EVERYBODY knows what I am talking about :P I do confess however that I am curious to know just who called it a Type 52 in the first place. Was it conway? In Eaglefield Hampton the Baby is not listed as a T52 but in 1961 in the Bugatti list and data book it is.This error then goes back over fifty years. When someone actually builds a T52 as drawn then I shall reapraise my position

According to Julius Kruta, the custodian of the original factory records, the type 52 was a design from Ettore for a an engine based on the type 50 but with single OHC and four-valves per cylinder. A drawing marked "Type 52" showing this engine is dated 2nd February, 1931. The drawing survives.

The factory catalogue for the "Voiture Électrique" clearly refers to the "Type "BABY" pour enfants de 6 a 8 ans environ".
