A new large scale Bugatti model is announced. Producer Bauer is developing a Bugatti Royale Coupe de Ville in 1:18. Quality should be comparable to CMC, and indeed, the prototype photos look very promising.

The production model is expected to be available october-november 2008 in Europe. Price? Around 360 euros.

If you go to the 3rd pic in the "whole album" thread you'll see that the pic depicts the interior with some hideous fluffy bling bling material.
Well, at the time I nearly had a coronary and attacked this monstrosity in every scale model site I could find !!
Thank heaven it was obviously only pre production shots and the final brushed velvet effect is stunning !!
Yip, very much CMC quality but the price is about 25% higher and a quick calculation for Johan wanting to deviate from book collecting....hmmm, let's see.....ZAR 4500!!!.....providing the Lehman destruction of world economy doesn't bump it still higher !! :?: :!:

The exchange rate is just ridiculous! And I do not understand, not a single South African Bank has gone under, not even Switzerland can claim as much, yet the bloody ZAR is about to break through the 14 to the Euro barrier. Ridiculous! And Jeroen has found some stunning additions for my library. Which still has to be paid for. In Euros. I think I'm gonna cry. Ask Bugattitude, there are no wealthy university librarians in all of South Africa. Definitely going to cry. Right now.

Sniff.
Johan

PS. You are both a very talented modelbuilder and a gentleman. Are you sure you're South African?

 Johan,
Namibian, my man.
Probably the German from Deutsch Sudwest Afrika that left a rather ingrained mark there. Both parents were originally from SA. Father from Kaap de Goede Hoop and mother from Oranje Vrijstaat.
Een Engels en een Afrikaans.

Which varsity are you at ??

ZAR 11.48 to the Lehman Dollar tonight!! Joke !

It is not like I'm forcing you at gunpoint to buy the books.

Just kidding.

No dear Friend, you're not the one holding a gun to my head, I am. Otherwise how will I convince myself to do it? Bugattitude (genius moniker) I'm at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (South Campus) in Port Elizabeth. Strangely enough, it was known as the University of Port Elizabeth way back when the Bothas was still ruling the roost.

Getting back to models; you know the 1/24th scale Bburago Bugatti Atlantic? The one with the truly horrible wheels? I've got one, and looking at it again the basic shape isn't too bad. Have you perhaps worked your magic on one of these? If so, please post some photos, you have no
idea how those wheels "Bugs" me. Geddit? Sorry. Really sorry.

Johan

Yep, the old Bbs all had hideous wheels, even in 1:18.
Johan, there's a terrific amount of self discipline required if you're not a zillionaire in this hobby.
My first philosophy was to stick to a single scale. Yes, there are a stunning array of 1:43, 1:32 and even 1:24 Bugatti models, 1:18 being the smallest selection by far. But unfortunately my passion for cars does not end in Bugattis. I love most of the older European and Am sports cars and muscle.
So no, I don't have any smaller or larger scales.
I went the 1:18 route as I also enjoy building dioramas and the figurines and workshop additions in this scale are really superb.

Sorry, some of the pics are a liitle off topic.

Your work is stunning. I love the Americana and the Cobra is a particular favourite. Bugatti remains my one true obsession, but like you I like a wide variety of cars. I have a bit of a thing for the Delage D8-120. The American collector Sam Mann twice took Pebble Beach with these ones, first a black & silver De Villars Roadster and in 2005 with a Portout bodied Coupe.

What you said about self-discipline struck a cord - I like models, I really do, but not enough to scrimp and save to acquire them. Books remains my vice of choice and due to budget restraints I too have to be absolutely disciplined in what I collect, so I stick to Bugatti. This way I avoid the temptation of those wonderful books on French coachwork, supercharged Mercedes Benz's and Simon Moore's seminal works on Alfa Romeo. Strangely enough, even though I am a huge Ferrari fan the literature does not attract me much, I think it's probably because there's too much available.

Now before I start working, I'm going to spend a while looking at your dioramas again, I love those little details that keep revealing themselves. Damn, you're really very talented indeed. Perhaps when you have time you can tell us how you start; I'm curious about others' creative process. What comes first, the idea or the cars? Do you plan everything in advance, or do you allow the idea to develop as you work?

With Much Admiration
Johan

Looks great. And I see you (in miniature) are in it as well!

Stick to the 1:18 models. They will set you back financially more then enough. Did you know Bburago was working on an EB112? However, things got bad, so they went the route of re-issuing older models in other colours or small modification. Just like Pocher did. The rest is history...

I have seen a type 59 "Roi de Belge" made from a Bburago. Perhaps a nice project... I can ask for some photos if you want?

About the wheels: Bburago is a master in making hideous wheels, and sticking them to everything that rolls... The atlantic wheels are way off, and I don't even want to mention the type 59...

I have been looking for 1:24 correct wire wheels, but they are difficult, if not impossible to find. If anyone knows of a source...
Perhaps we could convince Autograph Models to manufacture them, and also the T59 wheels?

You gents are way too kind!

I have always had a passion for creating miniature worlds. As a child growing up in Namibia, the German influence was evident everywhere.
So at Christmas the local high end shops would have wonderous Marklin railway railouts with superb mountain scenes, operating cable cars, buildings so exact you could almost hear the toilets flushing. lol
I left many a nose print on the display windows of Metje & Ziegler and Rudolph Schusters shops.

Then came the Airfix and Monogram plastic kits which I built as many of as my 5 shilling a week pocket money would allow.

Of course the real car passion started with Scalextric. And my first set at age 12 included...yes! a Bugatti T59 GP ! I believe this is now the most sought after Scalextric around.

Johan, I never plan a layout. It happens as I go. All dependant on what accessories and bits of "modable" material I can lay my hands on.

Herman, I never knew about the EB112?? If this is the case there must surely already be a mould somewhere? With Maisto having all Bb's moulds now it may be worthwhile investigating. If you have any info it would be more than welcome.

Also love some pics of the Roi de Belge if it's not inconvenient.

I modded a Bb T59 as well, adding the ever present radiator shield and then just highlighting the already pressed details on the body work and cockpit.

Cheers.

I will ask for Roi de Belge pictures. Could be a nice project.

Unfortunately I know nothing more about the EB112 by Bburago. I once read it somewhere, but I do not think there was any more relevant info, or even a picture. Perhaps some master has been made, or at least drawings (did Bburago use drawings? ), but I doubt it has reached the moulding stage. If there were moulds, I am sure they would have made at least one series.

There are 2 more 1:18 models as I recall:

Bburago Goofy / Pippo Disney version. Very limited run, and much sought after. Historically not interesting of course.

Al & Ruby made (makes) a type 57G Le Mans 1937 in 1:18. I have seen it a couple of times on Ebay, but never had the funds. If it ever pops up again, I will probably buy it.

OMG ! I never knew of the Al & Ruby car. This is a must have !! Especially a T57G LM !! It is made in so many smaller scales. I'm going to try and dig up some links right now !
Tks so much for the info.
Cheers.

Herman, I don't beleive you are talking about this car, do you? It is an old plastic, Vacuum formed toy, with metal base and clockwork drive. Must be around 1:18 scale. I have it in my collection.

By the way, the Burago T59 is not 1:18 scale, probably around 1:15....

Hey, Jaap
How you doing ?
Utterly frustrating this out of scale 1:18 business !!
If I place my T35 with the Bb T59 it looks like a Dinky with a Matchbox !!!
Darn and tarnation ! As if it's not hard enough collecting in 1:18 !
Good to hear from you.
Bug

PS I'm awaiting an appointment via a friend of mine to meet some guy who apparently has three original Bugattis'. I 'm told the one is a T35. Do you know of such a collector in Johannesburg ??
