Incase anybody was wondering, I have been designing and building prototype parts. Decided to build a one cylinder to verify my design and check to be sure the process to make the parts will work.

I have made the valve cage that gets pressed into the head that becomes the port, valve guide, and seat. I also made a 3/8 inch valve and a lash cap. Put a store bought spring on it and had a complete unit.

I have completed a 1" diameter distributor with steel vane and mount for the magnet. Installed a magnetic pickup (hall sensor) and completed the electronic ignition using a 66 cadillac coil.

Working on the parts from the bottom up. Lower crankcase and crankshaft are next followed by the rod and piston, then cylinder liner and head.

I wish i could include pictures. These mini car parts crack me up. I'll keep ya posted if anybody is interested.

Oh yah Happy Easter!!

If you E-mail the pictures to me (herman at bugattibuilder dot com) then I will include them in your post.

You could also upload them to the photo uploader (http://photo.bugattibuilder.com) and point to your album in your posts.

If you need any help, please let me know.

About your project: You make me very curious. It sounds really good. I wish I had both the time and the opportunity to create things like that. Both time and opportunity will be created, but it will still take a while.

Steve sent me the following over the E-mail:

Image

Valve cage without the spring. Once this is pressed into the head, I will drill into
the head and into the cage to complete the port.
I have changed the design a little to provide a longer valve guide. Also thinking i
might shorten the valve some and make a teflon cap to cover the bronze cap to aid in
wear. The bronze cap is threaded on. Also thinking i might cut more off the valve to
make the valve head thinner and reduce weight.

Image

Here is the distributor. Made longer for test purposes. The final one will be only
the top half. It is 1" in diameter and 1/2" deep.

Image

This is the magnet and sensor. The scale is in inches.

Image

This is the second try on the vane that blocks the magnet. The dark spot is the
magnet pressed into an aluminum mount.

Image

Here is when i actually made a sparkplug snap. I have an idea on how to make a cap.
As soon as i find what i am looking for at work i'll try and make one. I dont know
if an 8 cyl is possible at this size. I may have to make 2-4 cyl versions and put
one on each side to keep some distance between the wires inside the cap. At any
rate, I am sure enough that it will work that i will start making parts for a single
cylinder very soon.

Image

Single cylinder head drawing. I learned how to draw in cad making these drawings so
they might not be up to pro standard. They are good enough so i can make some parts.

Larger versions of the images can be found in the album, which I created for this project. You can visit the album by clicking the following link:

Indeed it is a small valve. Indeed you could turn some more of, to reduce weight.

Send more photo's as you go, I will put them in your postings. (just post your comments, I will paste in the photo's. I can edit your posts as well. (Administrator powers....)

Another 1/4 model. (from a French forum). I don't know if the engine works, though in 1/4 scale it should be possible!

Il s'agit d'une type 59 de 1934 au 1/4, soit 1, 1 m de long:

If that is a working model, than why bother with 1/4 scale. Why not go 1:1 instead?

If you can afford a garage, why built a 1:1 replica? Buy an original T59!

Going back to the 1/4 model: I was informed that the engine also works!

If anybody is interested, I have created a photo album with the latest parts i have made for the "little Bugatti". The camboxes are done along with the crankshaft. If work slows down i will make the main caps and get the crank shaft bolted in. I have also finalized my compression ratio so work can start on the pushrods, pistons, rings, and wristpins.

Hey Herman!! Put up a photo of the future camshafts. I'm hoping to cut 2 lobes a day and finish one cam a week. Takes 180 cuts per lobe so thats 1440 cuts per cam.

Your wish is my command. (Herman)

Amazing, Steve. Completely amazing. Grinding camshafts has always been magic to me. That makes you a magician!
