Dear all,

Last night and this morning some individual has deleted a large number of pages on the WIKI.
Fortunately the structure of the WIKI is such, that modifications can easily be undone.

At first it seemed that only "unknown chassisnumbers" were affected, but this morning also various chassisnumbers were randomly deleted (approx 50). On top of that even complete index pages were deleted (for example the index page for known type 55 chassis numbers).

At first I thought this would be someone who knew the chassis numbers for the given cars, and was not familiar with WIKI software, but after the deletion of the index pages I realised it was just an act of vandalism.

As every move on my server is logged, I traced back the IP adresses and blocked them. It is not possible anymore for these adresses to even reach the server. I did a trace and both IP adresses were FRENCH (Paris, to be exact). The Internet providers (wanadoo and interpc) have been notified and I asked for neccessary actions.

Although I know some people are not happy with the Bugatti Wiki, this is definately not the solution. If this continues to happen I will change the structure of the WIKI, limiting the ability to edit pages for visitors.

I can handle the Chinese spammers, the porn-posters, etc.

This, however, is personal. And that is where I get upset.

If this continues I will transfer all the WIKI pages into a book and will have that published.

Thank you for the intervention for Hermann who restored with effectiveness the situation on wiki.

If that could not be done. It would have been discouraging from continuing the work which I make with passion.

To consolidate by this intervention, I will be able to continue. I have many information and precise details to be still put on wiki.

I now have the name of the offender. He has been asked about the reasons for the vandalism...

He drives a Bugatti type 35B.

Final conclusion is that it is true vandalism, and it is a personal act.

That confirms my opinion.

This contravener is identified.

He leads a 35B type with chassis number which I do not know.
Probably Replica.

Another 35 with also a chassis number which I do not know, and T44.

It took part several times in the meeting of the Circuit des Remparts in Angoulême and in other meetings.

Well-known like such, to know which it is on forums of the Web and reports of the meetings on the Web. It is not an open secret! it is public.

It intervened on wiki to show that it did not want that its name and that of his/her friends (other participants with of Bugatti in the meetings) appear on Wiki, including the enumeration of the meetings concerned.

That concerns particularly of Bugatti Replica well-known or identified like such.

Dear Herman and Christian.

I suggest that this miscreant, this evil-doer, be named and shamed on this Forum. His real name, his Bugattis, both real and fake, and all the friends whose identities he so vainly tried to protect. Not only to punish and publically humiliate this slimy little bastard, but also to serve as a salutary warning to all those who think their ownership of something wearing a Bugatti badge elevates them above those of us not able to afford such symbols of wealth. I realise that this might make things temporarily uncomfortable for owner/contributors, but they own Bugattis. They have forfeited the right to cry victim, and this despicable little shit is one of them. They can deal with it.

Johan Buchner

PS. As you have probably surmised, my internet access has been restored - I'm back.

1) I think Wiki should have a few additions made to it:

a) Anyone can ADD new content to an existing chassis / thread
b) All deletions or "revising of existing content" should be moderator authorized (limited number of folks) -- thus some idiot can't repeat what occured.
c) To resolve what they feel might be incorrect history/ownership, they should address via forum discussion and presentation of why the info is incorrect. (and then info updated as required on Wiki by appropriate folks)
d) Even in the most perfect world, the data will never be perfect. Sometimes to the folks who post, the owners for personal reasons, etc. Thus everyone should realize it is a "living document" and as thus corrections / additions / deletions should be made as required over time and if appropriate.
e) If an owner would prefer to not have his name / ownership posted online -- please direct to the attention of the moderator to remove. But removal of the Chassis # and history information pertaining to it isn't an option. It is the "history" of a chassis. It is public record via publishing of books, magazines and presentation of the automobile in public over time.

2) Person who decided to delete / destroy the contributions of many should be:

a) Banished. His intent was obvious in rewriting history for his own personal or financial gain.
b) Contact of ABC / BOC and other Registrar's to make them aware of owners actions, chassis #(s) and intentions for doing what they did. (Mod -- if you need contacts to make happen, just let me and a few others know and we will take care of immeditely)
c) If the owner wants to create more problems -- just post the chassis #'s of the vehicles in question.

I agree. I agree. I agree. Changes to Wiki should be a process, as Mark said, it is a living document. Debate? Yes, by all means. Sabotage? No. Just no.

PS. I still want to know who it is. I would like to send him a private message.

I find the system of wiki very well. But there is can be other solutions for all new access of a person to Wiki.

- First solution: The condition would be an effective participation preliminary to the forum of Bugattibuilder or in " Introduce yourself" , where the eager person d' to reach wiki, would announce its intention. In this case Bugattibuilder could give him a code d' access to Wiki to emit pseudo.

- Second solution: It would be as possible to envisage in Wiki the possibility with any person, to give information or photographs in a particular space as only authorized people could transcribe then on the cards of Bugatti concerned.

This space " for information or modifications" would be opened with all, but that only authorized people could transcribe this information on the cards.

But if this new information of not approved people, appears indeed constructive for the data bank. They will then be authorized to intervene directly to bring their information.

I think that this would make it possible to avoid any foreign intervention which would not be in conformity with the spirit of wiki bugatti

This space " for information or modifications" would be a " letter-box " and not a forum , that only the foreign people could reach

That would not change the access for the existing pseudos.

I have several ideas of creating a complete new system. The current system is vulnerable for problems like these, for spam, and is difficult to adapt.

At this moment the forum, photo database and WIKI are relatively independant programs. I would like to integrate these functions, more or less, so information is more cohesive.
It is not possible to reach the level of integration with the programs used now.

I am working on a basic structural design, which a professional site developer needs to translate into a database structure, and fit it into the site design.

I do not have the funds for having this done, so it will be only after the basic design that I will investigate the real cost, and ways of raising the neccesary funds.

To conclude this matter, I can assure you all that the offender has made a mistake, which he wished he'd never make.

His on-line mistake affects him in real life now.

I would like to thank you all for your support, your nice Emails and the help I received. Let's hope this was a one-time event only.

Thank you all,

Herman
