For several days I've been contemplating wether to react to the recent unpleasant communication on the forum, and finally decided to do so. Why? Because I value this website, for me as a Bugatti enthusiast it is great to meet people here and share information. But recently I get the feeling the forum is dying. The main cause in my opinion is a lack of respect. Respect in the way of communicating and respect in valueing other opinions or views different from our own.

I know that a number of people are leaving this forum or are no longer contributing due to this factor (I suspect Marek is the most recent example).
The problem with a forum (or for example e-mail) is that it is very easy to communicate with others, but the richness of this communication is very limited due to technical restrictions. In face to face communication, more then 90% of the communication is non-verbal. The posture and facial expressions of your partner in communication tell you even more about his message then the actual words he says. This whole part is missing in online communication.
Of the remaining less the 10%, approximately half gets lost as with this medium, you also loose the tone and intonation telling you how to interprete the emotion accompanying the words your partner is using to convey his message. The remains, a meagre 5%. The only remedy, although very limited, are emoticons.

Valueing different opinions is also getting more and more uncommon. Not to play it personally, but Udolahr expressed his opinion that this forum should be only for people who have actual "building" experience and are working with their own hands on real Bugattis.
As far as I know, this forum was originated by and for people building scale model Bugattis, not real ones. (the owner of the forum is of course free to react if my understanding is wrong)
In my opinion, this forum is or should be a meeting place for ALL Bugatti enthousiasts, whatever the nature of their interest may be. Either technical for someone who is restoring cars or making parts on a commercial basis, or an owner who is maintaining his own car or who is interested in historical facts, or a non-owner who is looking for or contributing information.
The members of this forum have different backgrounds and different interests. Please respect that. Respect that some people are interested in chassis numbers and creating a register of information on the cars. These people might not be interested in case hardening of bevel gears or stuff like that, but they don't make degrading comments about that.

Also, please agree to disagree, in the way that different people with a technical background approach a matter differently or have different perspective or opinions on things. It is like having different plumbers saying that the other plumber has done a bad job.
As probably is obvious from the previous, I unfortunately don't have a technical background, but have great respect for people who do and what they can accomplish. Changing the oil on my car is about the maximum of what I can do.
I think the hotrod replica of the Kellner Royale someone on this forum is building is sacrilage, but I have the utmost respect for his abilities and the technical wonder he has realised.
A friend of mine started his own restoration company a few years ago and has worked and is working on several Bugattis (mainly Grand Prix). I regularly visit his workshop and I see the effort and craftmanship needed to do a full chassis up technical restoration. With great respect.
I resent the innuendo that nobody on this forum has any technical knowledge because the questons asked are not answered. Maybe that is because of the way they are asked or the prejudiced opinion of the person who asks. I know some of the names behind the nick names on this forum. Why they don't use their real name, I don't know, but I can garantuee you that there are members with over 50 years of hands on experience on Bugattis. Restoring, repairing and maintaining not only their own cars, but also doing so for others.

You are absolutely right Jeroen!

Respect for people with a different opinion is what a forum needs. Personally I am not very much interested in chassis numbers, but I do respect people like Christian and Kees who dedicate little more than a lifetime to it. Likewise, I don't expect everybody to be interested in the Bugatti airplane, or in the Breguet-Dorand helicopter which used half of a Breguet-Bugatti 16 cylinder in a series of succeful tests to develop the world's first successful helicopter.

But, everybody should be respectful towards eachother. I have a lot of respect for any replica builder, and have often written about replica's. Usually it is some engineer's own way to make his tribute to Ettore Bugatti.

And, no nickname....

Nice, I leave for 3 weeks or so (fried computer and job occupation) and I return in a complete mess.

Please all respect each other. That is basicly all I have to say at this point.
