I see that there is a chassis plate for 43192 for sale on ebay at the moment. Looks like the real thing to me.

The car is in a different place than the chassis plate...

As is so often the case. I would say that at least half of the cars I have examined had modern replica chassis plates fitted. You develop a keen eye for it after a while.

According to the David Sewell report of the car published in the type 43 register the original chassis plate was lost.... Probably this is the plate offered for sale on eBay at the moment

The seller is actually selling a whole bunch of chassis plates, only this one from a Bugatti. probably not a replica.

The 43192 plate sold for $1525.00 to the owner of 43192. Why would any underbidder be willing to pay close to this amount for a plate off of a car still in existence? It makes no sense.

Probably like the buyer of a Type 59/50bIII wide wheel at the Uno Ranch sale who paid £22,000 so that R.Jones would not get it.Even though R.Jones is the only owner of a Bugatti to fit it to ! :D

It makes sense to the seller to have a 2nd account, or a family member, or a good friend... 8)

Does anybody know how the chassis-plate got separated from the car? I'm sure there is a very interesting and entertaining story waiting to be told here. I know I'm curious about a guy willing to pay that much to reunite an original chassis plate with the chassis it was fitted to by the factory. Inspiring really.

Regards
Johan

My T57 plate belongs to a known car in the UK.It has been there for years and years.I saw it on the wall of a garage owned by a friend and bought it.He said that he found it in a lockup garage he used to rent ! I have had it for twenty years and my friend for some time before that.I can understand it if a car is scrapped or dismantled for parts but it is funny when a car still exists in one piece.I really must track down the owner and see if he has over a thousand dollars to spare ! :D

Earlier this year I sold a chassis plate for a Type 50 on ebay for quite a bit more than what this Type 43 plate went for. It wasn't bought by the actual owner of the car however, I had approached him earlier but he wasnt interested in buying it from me.

How about a Bugatti US-model engine plate? I have one of those. Any current owners interested in that?

No, just kidding, I won't sell.
