My name is Johan Buchner. I was born on the 1st of April (I have heard all the jokes, trust me) 1963 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and now 45 years later, I'm still here. I have loved cars since boyhood, but gradually Bugatti became something of an obsession. Strangely enough, it is only recently that I discovered other like-minded enthusiasts. Truth be told, I've always believed that to be a real Bugattist one has to own a Bugatti, it was only after joining this site that I realised that there are rather a lot of us who love Bugattis but cannot afford the real thing. Having said that, I quite enjoy sharing this forum with the owners, they speak from experience which I do not have. Very generous of them to share their good fortune with the rest of us, but I'm not sure if I were in the lucky position to own a Bugatti that I would have the time to contribute to a forum, I'd be too busy driving!

My proudest possession is my book collection - every spare cent I have goes to adding new treasures. Books satisfy me on so many levels, but after all this time there is still nothing better than leaning back, look at the pictures and dream a little. Yes research is very satisfying, but searching for the perfect angle to view 57374's roofline is even better! It was the esteemed Hugh Conway who taught me how to love Bugatti, I still maintain his Great Marques work is the best introduction to the marque, apart from being amazing value for money as well. And you can read it while lying on you back - not something you can do with Magnum, I assure you.

And then there is Griffith Borgeson. A most infuriating genius who pushes all my buttons all the time ; I did not start doing proper research until this man's opinions so infuriated me that I tried to prove him wrong on just about everything! I can accept that Ettore Bugatti was an indifferent engineer, a bad father and a truly lousy husband. Yes he was vain, and yes he was arrogant, and yes he "borrowed" rather a lot of ideas, but for Griffith Borgeson to be critical of the Royale, claiming it to be imbued with "elements of caricature," is just beyond the pale. Sacrilege! Whenever I feel the need to be provoked, I read Borgeson. The man infuriates me. I truly love him.

I spent most of my life self-destructing you know, only now in middle age do I find myself finally at peace. My name is Johan Buchner and I am a student of Bugatti. Life is very good. Enough for now I think.

A pleasure to make your acquaintance.

Johan Buchner

Dear God, I was young once. But I will let you into a wondrous secret, as grotesque as growing old may appear, it is a very small price to pay for the gentle joys maturity brings.

"Come grow old with me, the best is yet to come."

I am still

You seem to be very much aware of that, when the picture was taken!

But, chear up! You may be older now than you ever were, but you're also younger than you ever will be!

Of course, more introduction of Johan BUCHner (Buch obviously means Book in German, quite appropriate) in this article: "Of Bugatti and Books" http://www.bugattirevue.com/revue31b/buchner.htm

Hi Jaap.

I did not know that buch means book, mind you my surname is suppose to have an umlaut on the "u" but that too is beyond my computer skills. Does this alter the meaning?

Interesting story : My paternal grandfather (who was both South African and a nazi) got it into his head that we are somehow descended from German aristocracy, so he duly started researching our family tree, desperately searching for the missing 'von' (he got it into his head that Von Buchner would serve as proof that we were indeed aristocratic.) Well we're not, apparently our surname comes from a town in Germany called Buch, but I have never found a reference to it. This was bad enough, but what brought my grandfather's quest to a screeching halt was when he discovered that his great-grandmother was a "Kaapse vrouw." (Literally : Cape woman - which was slang for a woman of colour) For a race supremacist like him this nearly killed him, and he tried desperately to hide this delicious scandal, all to no avail - to this day we still have enormous fun taunting our family elders with references to the black Buchner clan!

So there you have it, not only are we absolute commoners, we are not even pure white. No bad thing in the new South Africa really.

Kind Regards
Johan

PS. Thanks for the link to my article, it is also being published in an upcoming issue of the Australian Bugatti Club's newsletter, which should ruffle a few feathers. Result!
