Anyone have any information on this car besides what is in the Wiki? I have seen it in person Radnor Hunt Concours in 2004, and look forward to seeing it again someday.

I've got nothing, not in Magnum and nothing in either British or Dutch Registers. Does anyone have access to any of the American Registers?

A photo or two included, lovely car Eric.

From the 2003 American Register:
Chassis was shortened at one time and body altered to resemble GP type. Sold at Harvard Auction in September 1991 in unrestored and shortened wheelbase configuration.
Current body was the result of restoring the original tail and cowl section and then filling in the missing 3 feet amidships when car's chassis lenght was restored to standard; restoration by Competition Motors. Pebble Beach entry in 1993.

The car is also mentioned in the 1979 and 1988 American Registers.

Wow! You guys are good. Any older pictures of this car. Pretty interesting story. For a while the owner had this car and 57143. It would be nice if there were any pics of them together.

Hello Erik,

Which owner are you talking about? Because on Wiki the only former owner known for 57143 is Desurmont.

Regards, Jeroen

This article http://www.artfact.com/auction-lot/the- ... onp6qzjuf8 says that it was part of the Rich collection starting in 1989. (57143). Is this not correct?

It probably is, but in the article there is no link to 38470 being owned by Jack Rich.

I am confused by what you post. Clearly 38470 is part of the rich collection see here http://www.jwrautomuseum.com/vehicles/1927bs.html and also the wiki for proof the other link says Rich also owned 57431, and I know he owned this car for a number of years. So, I wanted to know if there were any photos of these two cars together when they were both in the same collection, as Rich no longer owns 57431. Forgive me if I am not clear :).
Erik
PS Jack and John Rich are the same person. I know this for a fact. So, Maybe that clears things up?

Sorry, I should have looked better. Didn't mean to confuse you.

38470 was already shortened in or before 1954, because it is mentioned in the Bugatti Book by Eaglesfield. It then also had the front axle of a Talbot 105. This front axle has been removed in or before 1962 because that is mentioned in the 1962 Register by Conway.

Something else that is interesting about 57143, besides the first owner being Desurmont, concerns the coachwork. Both Laugier and Magnum has the following information :

Chassis Number : 57143
Engine Number : 21
Delivery Date : 02/05/1934
First owner : via Agent Crequiy (Magnum - Crequy) to Desurmont
Coachwork : Galibier - Magnum ; Cond.Int. - Laugier

As can be seen, the present coachwork looks like a Stelvio. A wonderfully elegant car, I first saw a photo of it on Jaap's BugattiPage during 1998. Does anyone know the history of this body?

"Then on 23 February 1937 the car was purchased from Lamberjack (in whose name it had not been registered) by Pierre Peguret, a pharmacist from Grenoble, who had the car registered in his name with the number 1897 HK5. However by the time of his purchase the car had been transformed from its original Galibier coachwork to a Stelvio cabriolet of the very latest design so it is surmised that Lamberjack, with his connections to the Bugatti factory, had decided to have the car rebodied, no doubt realizing that the sale of a newly styled drophead would prove far easier than a much earlier closed model. Indeed, it was not uncommon at that time for highly sought after quality cars like Bugattis to be updated once a few years old with more modern-styled coachwork."

Don't worry about it I am easily confused. Does anyone have any photos of either car? Besides reading about the cars history, I really enjoy seeing the photos themselves.
