[04 Aug 08] :: The future of the Malmerspach collection lies in the USA |
New homes for Schlumpf's "reserve collection" that includes 17 Bugattis.
The 'reserve' part of France's famous Schlumpf Collection, known as the Malmerspach Collection, and owned by Fritz Schlumpf's widow Arlette, has recently been sold following Arlette's death in May. Comprising 62 cars, including 17 Bugattis, it was bought in a joint venture between the well-known Bugattistes and classic car dealer Jaap Braam Ruben from Holland and his French business partner Bruno Vendiesse. 'Bruno knew Arlette quite well, and when she passed away he was engaged by her solicitor to sell the collection,' Braam Ruben told Octane. 'Arlette didn't want it to be auctioned off, so Bruno was allowed to sell the cars privately.' He continued: 'Although Arlette wanted the colleciton to remain intact, we just couldn't make that promise. The greater part, however, will be put on display in Peter Mullin's French Car Museum in California. The plan is to keep the models in unrestored condition. There are already so many restored vehicles, some of which have been ruined. Besides, you can glean a lot from unrestored cars. People are fascinated by barn-finds.' Most of the Bugattis are T57s - two are Stelvios - plus there is a T57 Ventoux, T57 Galibier, 43A roadster, four T40s and a Swiss-bodied T44. Some of the cars originate from the so-called Shakespeare collection. This was a batch of 30 models bought by Schlumpf from John Shakespeare (of fishing reel fame) in 1964. An inventory is being compiled of the cars, carriages and components. Twelve of the 17 Bugattis will be shipped to the States.

[30 Jul 08] :: Collection Dovaz - The fate of the Sleeping Beauties |
Everybody knows about the Dovaz collection, better known as the "Sleeping Beauties". A lot has been written about it, but curiously, the fate of many of the cars has been unsure, after they had been sold by Mr. Dovaz. Were they too badly damaged to be repairable? Or was it not as bad as suggested by the images, which are in Herbert Hesselmans book.
A trio of Bugattistes, consisting of Ard op de Weegh, Kay Hottendorf and Arnoud op de Weegh, took the effort to trace Mr. Dovaz, and the collection of cars that he once owned. What would be their fate?
The outcome of their efforts has been described in a new book:
Collection Dovaz - The fate of the Sleeping Beauties
These 250 pages describe every detail of the Dovaz collection, from the very beginning, to the photo session in the eighties, the forced removal, the Sarlat museum, and the fate of all cars that could be traced. And many, many of them could be traced. All is illustrated with as many as 275 photographs, graphics and even maps of the exact location of every car as they were stored for more than 20 years.
The book is written in French (foreword by Mr. Dovaz), Dutch (history of the collection) and English (fate of the cars). An English translation will be available at a later date.
The price will be around 40 euros.
Pre-registration for the book can be done by mailing Ard op de Weegh: ard [at] opdeweegh [dot] net |

[19 Jul 08] :: Bugatti Veyron Targa to be present on Pebble Beach |
According to InsideLine, Bugatti plans to unveil its Targa variant of the Veyron next month at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Monterey, California. The open-air hyper-car will use a removable hardtop, while a fabric cover can be used in its place if the heavens decide to open up mid-jaunt. IL is reporting that the chassis will be heavily reinforced to cope with the loss of the crucial structural component. Production will begin next year along side the Targa's fixed-roof predecessor, and with the current Veyron going for around $2 million, don't expect to get your 217-mph (limited) top speed kicks without paying another $250,000 on top of the Veyron's base-price. |
