Found it. Not a type 44 as written but a 30, originating from Monte Carlo.

I was referring to this car ; my memory is playing tricks again, this car is featured in both Magnum and Hucke/Kruta yet I thought it was a 4 door. Odd.


Jacobug I am fascinated to hear this car had no doors. I'm trying to figure out how the rear-body would hinge up. Like a Lamborghini Muira's engine cover but including the area where the doors would normally be? Another thing, that windscreen, or at least the bit that can be seen, also looks a little strange, but I'm not sure why.

I have more photgraphs of this one, the whole center section, including windscreen, hinges to the rear, There are small cut-outs to ease access a bit. Can't find the photographs at the moment though. This car is sometimes mistakenly indicated as a T44, is in fact a T38.

The windscreen looks strange, because it is attached to the doors.

That would have to be IZ 61837

I think this car might have been owned by Emil Bremme, a well known Bugatti driver in the twenties. Herewith you will find a picture of him in his first Bugatti with numberplate TZ 38937 .. This could be the same number is shown on the small type 35 fixed head.

I do not know whether it the same car is, but it could be the same number (IZ 61837).

The Car with the hinged front window is in the Magnum (English edition) pages 102&103 in the T30 section. It looks to me that it is the same car as posted above.
The text with the photo in the Magnum says the car was owned by Bruneau-Varilla, the proprietor op the "Le Matin" newspaper. It does however not state which type it is (but being in the T30 chapter...)

I made myself very unpopular when I reviewed Bugatti Magnum for Bugantics by suggesting that it contained too many errors for such an expensive book.

As time has progressed we realise that there might be more mistakes than we at first thought.

Do we have another here : Etienne Bunau-Varilla (I think NOT Bruneau as above or Buneau as in BM) was the son of the chief engineer who built the Panama Canal ; Philippe B-V. He was the NEPHEW of the owner of Le Matin.

I think Conway did his best - with the sources and data availible to him then.
Would he have a computer and internet availible then, there could have been less mistakes. But then if you don't have the means to check and the info availible seems plausible enough, why bother checking further ? I think if he had to triple-check everything he wrote as a fact - the BM would still not be finished today. I like to think of Conway's work as a foundation - one that we can continue to build on. It is a nice task to improve on his work. But for every expert another better expert can rise. Like in sports where they improve records all the time.

I only wished there were more passionate people who did the same for other beautyfull -less documented- makes, then there would be great books and forums on Invicta, Georges Irat, Tracta and all those beautifull small cyclecar makes etc. etc. instead of some (if any) specialistic low volume editions, often in languages I don't understand. And maybe because, if that were so, those makes also got more appreciation, there would be a more even spread of appreciation among those makes and not the warped situation we have now that a Bugatti is worth 6 figures or more and (to me) an equally beautyfull car like for example an Amilcar or Salmson much less.

Not correct. The car ist NOT #4878, which looked completely different.




It is Bremme's earlier T35 #4393, which he substituted in May 1927 against a T35B (#4842 or #4853, with the other one went to Eckhart Graf von Kalnein). A photo from my archive showing #4393 has been posted earlier in this thread, clearly showing the registration IZ-61837, wich can also be seen on the opening photo of this thread. When buying the T35B he converted the old T35 into a road car with coupé bodywork. Only in 1928 be substituted the coupé against another T35B (#4878) which received the Bachmann GS body. Strange, because he stopped racing #4842/4853 already at the end of 1927, so why not converting this one into a road car? But probably he intended to resume racing later, because he sold #4842/4853 only as late as 1930 (to Ernst-Günther Burggaller).

Reason for the wrong identification may be the registration, which on the 2nd photo (that from the Trust) reads "IY-2....", with the registration of #4878 indeed was IY-21166. The background is simply administrational, the Rhine Province until 1927 had prefix "IZ", after that it was divided into Cologne (still "IZ") and Düsseldorf (now "IY"). therefore Bremme, who lived at Barmen (Wuppertal) hat to re-register his cars from "IZ" to "IY". The 2nd photo has been taken later than the 1st one, with re-registration in between.
