If you look at the side view of the Atalante it is quite obvious just where William Lyons got his shape from for the XK120 fhc.It is well known that he showed a photo of the engine to his designers and asked for an engine that looked like that.

(history thread drift)

The bodylines for the Jaguar XK120 series were inspired by the BMW328 Mille Miglia roadster that appeared at the 1940 Brescia Grand Prix. Post WWII the 328MM BMW went through Col H J Aldington and "became" the first AFN / Frazer Nash with a change to righthand steering and an appropriate AFN grille -- which is how Lyons first saw it in the UK. Same car was also the inspiration as well for the MGA series and for a few other manufacturers later.

The FHC coupe iteration and inspiration from the Atalante -- I had heard that before. But never was able to find information to confirm.

(end history thread drift)

I was reading the Allard story yesterday [ David Kinsela ] It tells of how an Allard was made in the early 1950s with a welded magnesium body.It was made by the company who made a lot of aircraft parts during the war including for the De Havilland Mosquito. So David Granger is not quite correct when he talks of his company being the only ones to master this sort of work.Anyway it looks now as if from having NO aerolithe we now have two    8)

Didn't the Type 50B engine have a 'sump' made from fabricated and welded magnesium sheet?

Lazarus, thanks for the link. I read that the canadians are having problems with head room. I had to laugh because that is one of the many reasons why all real specialists on the subject believe the Aerolithe was built on a prototype T57S chassis.

Dear Bugwrench,It is Uwe who you should thank not I.Maybe the canadians can find a rich small man to solve the headroom problem. You will be pleased [ I hope ] to know that we have now cast four new T251 heads sucessfully from the original patterns and one new block. The pattern that you found for me at BV's establishment for the combustion chamber is one of two similar patterns. They changed to a smaller cast hole for the valve seats. The first castings [ in period ] having a problem with insufficient metal to clean up.I happily had already seen two "duff" half machined heads with the gentleman in switzerland and M.Kettalar [ wrong spelling] They had stayed at the factory until HGC took them home and sold them for £5 each to these two gentlemen. Each of whom asked me £5000 for his head !!!!
