Prachtige foto.

Deze foto is ook terug te vinden in het boek;
From Milan to Molsheim op blz 71.
De foto is gemaakt rond 1903 en laat zien het sleutelen ivm de koelproblemen van de T5.

Bugatti in Boston:
These photos taken May 12 1926, show the first Bugatti imported into the US. This is a 1913 with chassis no. 500 (8 valve, 10hp). While the original owner has not been verified, we do know that in 1915 the car was registered to Ray Slater of Boston. By the time these photos were taken, the car was owned by Gordon Ayer. The location was along Soldier’s Field Road, on the Cambridge-Brighton line. The car has not survived, but remnants of the engine were found in the legendary scrapyard of Mike Caruso in Hicksville (Long Island), New York and survive to the present. Photos courtesy of Sandy Leith.

1921 Bugatti Type 23:
This T23 Bugatti was owned by then-graduate student and instructor, Charles Chayne. The engine was rebuilt as a class project headed by Professor Dean Fales in a class which included future Bugatti owners Alec Ulmann and Sam Eliot. Chayne went on to become design chief at Buick and to own a Bugatti Royale, just after WW2, which he eventually donated to the Henry Ford Museum.
The Chayne T23 (chassis no. 1253) ended up with Crocker Snow who had John Burgess install a Ford V8 engine after some mechanical difficulties, an operation he later repeated for Snow’s T30 Bugatti. The car was likely scrapped during the WW2 scrap drives, but the radiator and cambox survive in private ownership.
The building we see was on Vassar Street in Cambridge and was torn down in the 1990′s for a new building. Courtesy of Sandy Leith.

Dear Uwe:

It should also be mentioned that the 8 valve of Ray Slater, later Gordon Ayer, shown in Cambridge in my photos is chassis no. 500 with engine no. 127. The last Conway book mistakenly says the engine number is no. 217...it is no. 127. (I own the upper and lower crankcases and verified this!)

Also, the Charles Chayne T23, had engine no. 850.

Cheers,

Sandy

In the report the engine no. 500 is indicated

Mooie foto.
