I will post a better photo as soon as I can find one. I need to find out which of them this is, it would appear not to be the dark grey one doing the concours circuit for the last few years.

Looks like a 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta, but may be also a 6C 2300/2500. But the cooling slits around the grille should make it an 8C.

Hi Michael

Yes, sorry I should have made it more clear; this is indeed an 8C 2900B Berlinetta by Touring, owned by John Shirley (he also owns a beautiful Ferrari 375 - ex Rosselini) What I will only know once I get home, is which one of them it is; I suspect it might be the ex-South African car owned by a Mr.Cohen who now lives in America. The shape of the rear spat means it is most probably not the Oscar Davis car, and it is different from the the grey car I mentioned.

If my fellow Bugattisti have no objections, I will do a post on all the Berlinettas. By the way, this is only the second time an Alfa Romeo has won at Pebble Beach ; Bugatti leads with 9 winners, followed by Duesenberg and Mercedes Benz with 6 each and then Rolls Royce with 5. Daimler, Jaguar and Packard won 3 times each, Chrysler, Delage, Hispano Suiza, Isotta Fraschini and Pierce Arrow, twice, Austin Healey, Bentley, Cunningham, Delahaye, du Pont, Edwards, Horsch, Maserati, Minerva, Talbot Lago and Voisin took 1 victory each. JB Nethercutt won Pebble 6 times, followed by Bill Harrah and Sam Mann with 4 victories each.

Till later then.
Johan

Yes, it is as I thought, it is the ex-South African car which won. It is chassis number 412035, the 1938 Motor Show car and it was originally dark blue. The others are as follows : 412024 red with chrome wires, exhibited at the 1999 Paleis Het Loo Concours, originally delivered to Jack Bartlett ; 412029 pale blue, now in the Alfa Romeo Museum ; 412036 won the Mille Miglia in 1947, now painted grey, was entered Pebble Beach 2006 ; 412020 is the black car now owned by Oscar Davis. I will post photos of all as soon as SUPERCARS.NET gets its you-know-what in gear and finishes its Pebble Beach Gallery.

Oh, and a Type 51 was offered for sale by one of the auction-houses, but that's a whole different post again.

Regards
Johan

Right, let's get back to Bugattis, shall we?

Jon's Alfa is sn# 412035

Here is a picture of it earlier this year. If any questions about the chassis, feel free to ask. (I'll post the restoration in a few weeks) It was a grand effort by a great team of enthusiasts to restore this car and present it at Pebble Beach this year.

Hi Mark

A true pleasure to hear from you, I loved your article on the restoration of the Nethercutt T51 (51133), as a matter of fact, I mentioned the superb research in an earlier post.

I really would like to hear the complete history of 412035, it is, as far as I'm aware, the only 8C2.9 to spend time in South Africa. An interesting aside, the only S.A. Duesenberg J ended up in the Imperial Collection in Las Vegas, now disbanded I believe. An article about an Alfa Romeo on Bugattibuilder.com? Perhaps you can ease my fellow Bugatti lovers' pain by telling us 51133's frame number.

I'm especially interested in how skilled craftsman reconcile originality with the demands of Pebble Beach, certainly the photos of this years winner shows no signs of over-restoration. But I know very little of this car's original specification - how original is the finish? Was the interior originally light tan leather?

If nothing else your contribution will spark off the 8C2.9 versus T57S controversy all over again. Carlo Anderloni was a very skilled designer and coachbuilder, Jean Bugatti, on the other hand, was a genius. The Atlantic is a breathtaking visual triumph ; the Alfa, a very competently designed coupe. Your turn.

Regards
Johan Buchner.

PS. I read that Mr. Shirley can't wait to take his car back on the road, and he partook in the Pebble Beach road run. My kinda car-guy.

Can't some Alfa lover build a AlfaBuilder website for these kind of pictures? Maybe a nice car for those who like them, but not here! I'd rather see a Pur Sang, that is at least a (badly executed but still) Bugatti design!

Wow, and then people are complaining about the ads on my website...

Click on them, they pay (partly) for the cost of running the site.
