Who is the guy in the car. He looks important... Mr. Deutz?

Herman this is quite an interesting photo; have a look on p.20 of Magnum. Not the same photo as yours, but probably the same car. Interestingly enough, on your photo the name Bugatti can be clearly seen painted large on the radiator, but on the one in Magnum it has been has erased. (probably by Mathis) Anyway, the occasion seems to be the Kaiserpreis Rennen in June of 1907. As you rightly remarked, the guy looks important ; perhaps the Kaiser and his family?

Where did you get this photo?

Johan

Got it on the mail. Probably a scan from a book.

The picture was taken when Ettore Bugatti and Emile Mathis still were friends, hence the name "BUGATTI" written over the radiator. After the two guys went separate ways, Mathis still used this Type 8 in several events.
The driver in the picture is EMILE MATHIS.

One more thing: the picture was taken in 1906 not 1907. In 1907 the writing "BUGATTI" was already removed by Mathis due to his "incommunicado" with EB.

I`m not really sure, but what I remember is, that the "bugatti" on the radiator was later put into the pic by ettore for his first sales-letters.
